Transgender people will get holistic health services under Ayushman Bharat – PMJAY, Department of Social Justice signs MOU with NHA
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Health Authority (NHA) to provide a comprehensive medical package for transgender people under Ayushman Bharat-PMJAY to Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi, said a press release. The MoU was signed by Secretary R. Subrahmanyam, Department of Social Justice and Empowerment under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and Director General of RS Sharma, National Health Authority , under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in the presence of Virendra Kumar, Union Minister. Social Justice and Empowerment and Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare.
On this occasion, Union Minister Virendra Kumar said that this joint initiative of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Ministry of Social Welfare and Empowerment is the first of its kind in the country. and will not only give a new direction to our society but also give transgender people a legitimate and respectable place in society. The minister said that under this medical health program, a special “Ayushman Bharat TG Plus” card is provided to the transgender society by linking the SMILE program with the “Ayushman Bharat program” of the Ministry of Health and Welfare. to be family-run, under which more than 50 health facilities are provided.
Services will be provided free of charge. Going further for the transgender society, cosmetic surgery has been provided as part of this card. India will be the first country in the world to provide free facilities like cosmetic surgery to the transgender community under a government scheme. Simultaneously, a person belonging to a transgender society from any state or any part of India will be able to avail this card at any Ayushman Bharat affiliated hospital. Mandaviya said the Memorandum of Understanding reached today between the National Health Authority (NHA) and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE) will extend all healthcare benefits to transgender people (holders of a transgender certificate issued by the National Portal for Transgender People) across the country. MoSJE will fund Rs.5 lakh insurance cover per transgender beneficiary per year.
A complete master package is being prepared for the transgender category, including the existing AB PM-JAY packages and specific packages (sex reassignment surgery (SRS) and treatment) for transgender people. They will be able to seek treatment at one of AB PM-JAY’s approved hospitals across the country, where specific packages are available. The scheme would cover all transgender people who do not receive these benefits from other state-sponsored centres/schemes. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment provides identity cards to members of the transgender society by registering them at the central level, scholarships have been granted, transgender protection cells are being established , skills development programs are being put in place as well as provision has also been made for the transgender society for a “complete medical health package”.
Senior officials from both ministries and members of the transgender community were also present at the event. (ANI)
